Sic Semper Tyrannis is the motto of Virginia’s Great Seal, adopted in 1776. The figure is Virtus, the genius of the Commonwealth, standing over the fallen figure of Tyranny. Her spear is lowered and her parazonium is sheathed, while Tyranny lies with a fallen crown, broken chain, and scourge: symbols of defeated oppression.
Sic Semper Tyrannis translates to “Thus always to tyrants.”
