For the great educator and child advocate Maria Montessori, when it came to children liberty and discipline were two sides of the same coin. If we observe a lack of self-discipline in children, somewhere there is a lack of liberty. When we use the word “discipline” in the Montessori way, we are speaking about self-discipline. The most effective way to offer the maximum liberty to the developing child and to see the maximum self-discipline is to understand the child’s developmental needs, and prepare an environment rich with activities to meet those needs. This is what Montessori method is all about.
In an age of helicopter parenting and ever-increasing limitations of the boundless imagination and potential of our children, it's worth remembering that without the liberty to act, and the freedom to develop naturally, the self-discipline required for personal happiness is diminished.
