In the Book of Matthew (Matthew 2:1-12), the Magi are described as following the star to find the "king of the Jews." The specific verse is Matthew 2:2 (New International Version):
Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.
In the original Greek text, the term used for "king" is "βασιλεὺς" (basileus), and the term used for "Jews" is "Ἰουδαίων" (Ioudaion). So, the Magi are seeking the newborn who has been born as the king of the Jews, guided by the star they observed.
The Greek word "βασιλεὺς" (basileus) carries the meaning of a ruler or king, and in this context, it specifically refers to the anticipated Messiah or the promised King of the Jews. The Magi were seeking the one born to fulfill the prophecies of a royal and messianic figure in Jewish tradition.
