On June 13, 1936, August Landmesser stood in a crowd of thousands giving the Nazi salute and crossed his arms instead.
He wasn't a rebel by nature. He'd even briefly joined the Nazi Party. But then he fell in love with Irma Eckler, a Jewish woman, and everything changed. He proposed. He was expelled. He was arrested. He never saw his family again.
Irma was murdered at Bernburg in 1942. August was conscripted and presumed dead in 1945.
What's left is this photograph. One man who wouldn't raise his arm. No weapon, no speech, no grand gesture. Just crossed arms in a sea of salutes.
