"If voting changed anything they'd make it illegal." - Emma Goldman.
Emma Goldman seemed to piss everyone off.
The U.S. government repeatedly arrested her, imprisoned her for opposing the WWI draft, then deported her to Russia in 1919. She arrived hopeful about the revolution and discovered the Bolsheviks were building another dictatorship, complete with censorship, political prisoners, and persecution of her fellow anarchists.
So she said so. Loudly.
This went over beautifully with Western radicals who’d already decided Russia was the future. Her accounts of Bolshevik repression earned her denunciations from people who had applauded her attacks on the American government. Apparently, speaking truth to power is really more of a team sports thing.
Goldman kept talking. This one became a classic.
