The origins of the tigerstripe pattern can be traced back to French military influences in Indochina during the 1950s. The French colonial forces used a camouflage pattern known as "lizard" or "lézard," which featured irregular shapes and stripes. The pattern was developed in the early 1960s for use by South Vietnamese forces, particularly the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). It was designed to provide effective camouflage in the dense jungle environments prevalent in Vietnam. It's characterized by its broad stripes and blotches in various shades of green, black, and brown. The irregular shapes mimic the dappled light and shadow found in jungle foliage. The pattern is intended to break up the silhouette of soldiers and equipment, making them harder to spot.
Although initially intended for South Vietnamese forces, the tigerstripe pattern gained popularity among American advisors and Special Forces operating in Vietnam. The pattern offered better concealment than the standard-issue olive drab uniforms. Consequently, it saw extensive unofficial use by U.S. troops, particularly during the early years of the conflict.
