We created this mysterious flag in American history from one of the 40 existing hand-sewn flags of its kind left. There was an old museum piece that was in very bad shape that I was captivated by, so I decided to paint the design from sketches I did from photos. Torn and distressed, the vintage flag looked like it was from the very early period of the Republic, but it was more likely made in the earliest years of the Nineteenth Century according to the expert explaining the piece to me - an Ojibway expert at Fort Snelling, MN. These flags were evidently presented to tribes by representatives of the US government as a peace offering. The timeline where they were used makes it possible that the Lewis & Clarke expedition could have carried them, but there is no evidence they actually did. In any event, I thought the design was a fascinating and rare piece of history.
