Today Minnesotans hate the new flag that came out of a committee of leftist Democrats from the Twin Cities put together by Tim Walz in an election year while he was running for Vice president.
The old one wasn't great either. Let's be honest, it's just the put the state seal on a blue flag. That old seal was literally meant to celebrate the White Man pushing the Dakota out of Minnesota onto reservations so that they could develop the land.
But it fit the worldview of the settlers at the time. The seal was created before the U.S.-Dakota War and the eventual largest execution in American history. Things were tippy to say the least. The1857 Spirit Lake Massacre had just happened where the Inkpaduta’s Wahpekute Dakota band killed around 40 settlers. Then more attacks happened and the Feds brought in the military.
It wasn't some small ruckus. Over 600 white civilian settlers were slaughtered by Dakota fighters. It was brutal stuff. Women, children, bodies mutilated. Today we'd call the beath squads. Back then they were called raiding parties. Regardless of what you call it, we should at least understand how a state seal celebrating the removal of the Dakota seemed like a good idea at the time.
Back then the flag represented frontier settlers pushing their plows while pushing the Indians into the Western sunset. Today we have native white dudes mowing their plots while Somalians move in from the rising East. I kept the St. Anthony Falls, axe, stump, lady’s slippers, and rifle. I just made it more 21st century.
Love it, hate it; at least you can tell what the hell is going on inside that seal now. The old version "updated" in the 1950s looked like modern art in there. Sort of a visual train wreck.
Or maybe you like the original. I redid that too.
