  • Gary Johnson 2012 Presidential Campaign Reproduction Heavyweight T-shirt

In 2012, the Libertarian Party turned to a familiar face with a proven track record of executive experience to carry its banner in the presidential race – Gary Johnson. A former two-term governor of New Mexico, Johnson brought a unique blend of political experience and a staunch commitment to individual liberty to the forefront of the national stage.

Gary Johnson's journey to the 2012 presidential campaign was influenced by the growing libertarian movement, fueled in part by the popularity of Ron Paul. As a Republican, Ron Paul had run for president in 2008 and 2012, championing libertarian principles and gaining a dedicated following.

Inspired by Ron Paul's message and seeking to provide a viable alternative for liberty-minded voters, Gary Johnson joined the Libertarian Party. In 2012, he sought the party's nomination for president, positioning himself as a pragmatic, socially tolerant candidate with a focus on fiscal responsibility.

At the Libertarian National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, in May 2012, Gary Johnson secured the party's nomination for president. His running mate, Judge Jim Gray, added legal expertise to the ticket. Johnson's campaign aimed to continue the momentum generated by Ron Paul's presence in the Republican primaries, offering a principled and consistent alternative.

While facing significant challenges in breaking through the duopoly of the Republican and Democratic parties, Gary Johnson's candidacy brought unprecedented visibility to the Libertarian Party. His inclusion in presidential debates elevated libertarian ideas to a broader audience, challenging the status quo and expanding the conversation on individual freedom.

The influence of Ron Paul's Republican campaigns was palpable, as Johnson's run benefited from the growing interest in libertarian principles. Although the 2012 election did not result in Gary Johnson securing electoral votes, his campaign achieved notable milestones for the Libertarian Party. Johnson's candidacy laid the groundwork for his subsequent run in 2016, where he once again represented the Libertarian Party in the pursuit of advancing libertarian ideals within the American political landscape.
