This rare early Bear Flag design is associated with Peter Storm, a member of the 1846 Bear Flag revolt. A surviving photograph from about 1870 shows Storm holding a stark frontier banner with a lone red star, a broad red stripe, and a black grizzly lunging across the field. It is a rougher, fiercer relative of the California flag that later became familiar.
Liberty Maniacs studied that historic photograph and hand-drew the artwork from scratch, preserving the crooked star, airborne bear, and handmade character of Storm’s flag. The result is an obscure piece of California history rebuilt clearly enough to fly again.
Printed on both sides of lightweight polyester, it works beautifully on a porch, in a garden, outside a cabin, or anywhere that could use a considerably less domesticated California bear.
Mounting note: This traditional-style flag has a sewn pole sleeve, also called a rod pocket, along the top edge. Slide it onto a compatible horizontal flag arm. It does not use grommets, clips, or ties. Flagpole and mounting hardware are not included.
