Before FedEx, before UPS, before the government thought it could scan your mail and your tweets there was Lysander Spooner. In 1844, this anti-authoritarian firebrand launched the American Letter Mail Company to break the U.S. Postal monopoly, undercutting their bloated rates and daring to deliver mail without federal permission. Spooner was a constitutional scholar and knew the postal service was literally the only federal agency written into the Constitution. But that just bounced of his 19th century `tism. He didn't read it like the Feds had monopoly. Just a mandate to send mail. And even if it did, Spooner's hot take on constitutions was essentially, "hey, where did I sign this contract?"
Naturally, the government couldn’t tolerate that kind of ballsy insolence. They dragged Spooner through the courts, buried him in legal threats, and finally strangled his rebel operation in 1851. But the message was clear: government hates free markets, and Spooner didn’t flinch.
