With the Declaration of Independence sent to King George, the new Commonwealth of Virgina was born. Richard Henry Lee, George Mason, George Wythe, and Robert Carter Nicolas were charged with creating its new seal. Not wanting it to resemble British coat of arms, Mason and his committee literally went right for the jugular of their former countrymen with the new design. They went Roman classical. Heck, you might even say they went Spartacus on it.
On it the Roman goddess Virtus, the personification of classical virtue and peace with her foot upon the back of tyranny, victorious over the British crown. She holds a downward-pointed spear and long ceremonial triangular dagger called the parazonium that is sheathed because her deed is done.
The motto chosen, easily the most bad ass ever, Sic semper tyrannis, or Thus always to tyrants. This being the same words exclaimed by Brutus as he plunged his knife into Julius Caesar.
