Festivus, the Festival of Fights. The fictitious holiday was born on the sitcom “Seinfeld,” in the Dec. 18, 1997, final-season episode titled “The Strike.” It takes place on December 23rd sorts, created by Frank Costanza after an unfortunate department store scuffle while shopping when George was just a little importer/exporter. Frank's holiday was a protest of sorts against the crass commercialization of the holiday season. It replaces a Christmas tree with an “unadorned aluminum pole” mainly because tinsel is too distracting according to Frank. It includes “feats of strength” along with an “airing of grievances” around the dinner table about how others disappointed you over the past year.
