A little slice of history. In 2012, Congressman Ron Paul built upon his grassroots groundswell from the 2008 presidential election to run a substantial and even more capable campaign across the United States. His message of noninterventionism and principled libertarianism struck a chord with millions of independent-minded Americans as war fatigue grew during the first term of the Obama administration. Angered that the President completely abandoned his anti-war message, many Americans looked for a capable voice that would conclude the wars which were now the longest in American history.
Paul ended up attracting throngs of young people and had more support amongst active military than all other candidates combined. His message of peace, liberty, and economic freedom was an existential threat to the establishment, and much like how the media and party establishment closed ranks against Bernie Sander's upstart run in 2016, Paul was brutalized in the media and through party tricks.
The "Ron Paul Revolution" stayed alive in many ways through the future, spawning a Kentucky Senatorial seat for his son Rand, and paving the way for the independent upswell seen in the 2016 elections, where the Sanders campaign took on some of the themes from the left, and of course Donald Trump successfully rallied antiestablishment sentiment for his successful bid to the White House.
