Adam Smith's metaphor for the unseen forces that move the market economy. Through individual self-interest and freedom of production as well as consumption, the best interest of society, as a whole, is fulfilled. The constant interplay of individual pressures on market supply and demand causes the natural movement of prices and the flow of trade.
Adam Smith uses the metaphor in Book IV, Chapter II, paragraph IX of The Wealth of Nations. The Wealth of Nations sold briskly in the American colonies, some 2,500 copies within five years of publication, even though our people were at war. This is a remarkable fact, for there were only three million people.
