In 1904, Theodore Roosevelt ran for president on three words: the Square Deal.
It sounds simple. It wasn't. Roosevelt had already spent three years in the White House after McKinley's assassination, and he'd used every one of them picking fights with people who expected a quiet, manageable president. He broke up the railroad trusts. He mediated the coal miners' strike, the first time the federal government had ever sided with labor over management. He pushed through the Pure Food and Drug Act after Upton Sinclair's The Jungle made Americans realize they had no idea what was actually in their food.
The Square Deal meant something specific: a fair shake for workers, consumers, and businesses alike. Not socialism. Not laissez-faire. Something in between, enforced by a federal government that was finally willing to use its power against concentrated wealth. Roosevelt called it the Square Deal because he believed the game had been rigged, and he intended to un-rig it.
He won the 1904 election in a landslide, carrying 56% of the popular vote. Then he kept going. By the time he left office in 1909, he had set aside 230 million acres of public land, created five national parks, and filed more antitrust suits than all previous presidents combined.
He was also, famously, a lot. But that's a different shirt.
This garment-dyed heavyweight tee is printed with the Square Deal slogan in a style that looks like it came off a 1904 campaign poster. Available in six colors, sized S through 4XL.
