The Black Devils. Even their stationery was a threat.
At Anzio, the First Special Service Force left calling cards on German bodies and fortifications:
Das dicke Ende kommt noch.
“The worst is yet to come.”
An unusually candid customer-service policy.
The Devil’s Brigade was a joint American–Canadian commando force assembled in Montana in 1942 under Robert T. Frederick. Recruitment favored lumberjacks, hunters, prospectors, and other outdoorsmen. Then came parachuting, demolition, mountaineering, winter warfare, and close combat. Take men already comfortable in miserable conditions and give them considerably more dangerous hobbies.
The Germans had mistaken a cliff for a security system.
At Monte La Difensa, previous Allied assaults had run into entrenched German defenses. The Force approached from the steep side, climbing through the night with ropes and equipment in freezing rain. They reached the summit and overwhelmed the defenders.
Imagine spending weeks fortifying a mountain, then discovering the Americans and Canadians had come up the part you considered a geological inconvenience.
At Anzio, they blackened their faces with boot polish and slipped into enemy territory on relentless night patrols. Raids, reconnaissance, prisoners, and those charming little calling cards. The Black Devils reputation grew out of a very practical German concern: these men kept turning up where they weren’t wanted.
They went on to spearhead the Allied entry into Rome and assault islands ahead of the southern France landings. Today’s U.S. Army Special Forces groups trace their official lineage and honors to the Force.
That red USA–Canada patch on Brad Pitt’s Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds? First Special Service Force. The patch is real. The Tennessee psychopath and his scalp quota are Tarantino’s contribution.
