A lesser-known work by Remington, the oil was done in the last year of the artist's life. Indians Simulating Buffalo is one of the more impressionistic in style ever done by Remington. The aggressive play of color and light in the bison robes strewn over the horses and the dramatic hues found in the shadows contrast brilliantly with the golden expanse.
In the background a faint wagon train appears, begging the viewer to wonder if these men are feining bison to hunt, conceal themselves from the caravan, or slyly reconnoitering their next target.
