Originating from the German words Fleck (spot) and Tarnung (camouflage), the Flecktarn pattern was developed during the Bundeswehr Truppenversuch 76 trials in the 1970s and was finally confirmed for use by the German Armed Forces in 1989. This five-color design, featuring black, reddish-brown, dark olive, and medium olive-green spots on a moss green background, has since become one of the most recognizable and widely used camouflage patterns in the world.
