The two-thumbed Gonzo fist began with artist Thomas W. Benton’s poster for Hunter S. Thompson’s 1970 Freak Power campaign for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado. Clutching a peyote button in its palm, the fist outlived the campaign and became the enduring symbol of Thompson and Gonzo journalism.
Thompson’s campaign was serious, even when the platform sounded wonderfully unhousebroken. He proposed decriminalizing drugs for personal use, protecting Aspen from predatory development, disarming sheriff’s deputies in public, and renaming the town “Fat City” to make it less marketable to greedheads. He took 37% of the vote and nearly became Sheriff Hunter S. Thompson.
This distressed Gonzo fist shirt carries Benton’s famous symbol atop the dagger emblem familiar to generations of Thompson readers. Proper attire for writers, weirdos, anti-authoritarians, and anyone who believes journalism should occasionally frighten the people it usually has lunch with.
