Before the Libertarian Party had much of anything, it had Roger MacBride and the radical proposal that Washington mind its own business.
In 1972, MacBride was a Republican elector expected to vote for Richard Nixon. Instead, he cast his electoral ballot for Libertarian nominees John Hospers and Tonie Nathan, making Nathan the first woman in American history to receive an electoral vote.
Four years later, MacBride became the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee. He campaigned for sound money, free markets, civil liberties, nonintervention and rolling back a federal government already suffering from delusions of adequacy.
He won no states and roughly 173,000 votes. Washington survived. The idea did too.
