Have caffeinated fun in any electoral season. The Founding Fathers were skeptical of straight up democracy, which was often dubbed a “tyranny of the majority”.
John Adams quipped that straight up democracy always and everywhere commits suicide given time. Others thought it would lead to anarchy, monarchy, and a whole host of stuff guys in wigs and knickers sneered at. So the founding fellas made a constitutional government with defined limits. At least for a while. They also layered in checks and balances to make sure no institutions would run roughshod over others. Smart move.
This quote is attributed to an assortment of people. Dubiously to Ben Franklin. Sometimes to other Founders. But nobody knows who coined it. It's good, though. So we figured you might like a mug or shirt with it.
