Robert Kennedy 1968 Campaign 3/4 Sleeve Raglan

In the summer of '67, as social upheaval and the mishandling of the Vietnam War roiled the nation, a second term for LBJ seemed as elusive as a Minnesota snowball in July. The deepening chasm between Baby Boomer students, hard New Left radicals, and the rest of the Democratic party made even the GOP's internal squabbles look like a friendly game of bingo.

Violence erupted from coast to coast, and anti-war protests, coupled with some crafty Marxian opportunists hitching a ride on the movement, left many Americans scratching their heads. It felt like the country was spiraling into chaos, and the Democratic party found itself right smack in the middle of the whirlwind.

But the final nail in LBJ's political coffin? When Robert Kennedy threw his hat in the ring. Just two weeks later, savvy ol' President Johnson realized the jig was up. He'd already barely scraped by in the New Hampshire primaries against Sen. Eugene McCarthy. So, on March 31st, he dropped the bombshell: "I'm out."

Now, the field was wide open—well, kind of.

Fast forward 66 days, and there's RFK, celebrating a California primary victory when tragedy struck. He was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, leaving the Johnson Administration with not one, but two nominations from Kennedy assassinations in just five years. Hubert H. Humphrey stepped in as the Democratic candidate, but the party was about as united as a jigsaw puzzle in a hurricane by that point.

Predictably, Nixon came out on top that November.
