Before Air America there was Civil Air Transport, the CIA’s very own airline. On paper it was a legit carrier. In reality it was a flying conspiracy held together with taxpayer dollars, shady contracts, and a steady supply of heroin, guns, and mercenaries.
CAT was born in the wreckage of postwar China when “former” Flying Tigers decided to swap patriotic dogfights for covert freight. Korea, Laos, Vietnam, the Golden Triangle, or wherever there was a dirty war or a backroom deal, CAT planes were in the sky. Presidents pretended not to know. The mob definitely knew. And the Company cashed every mile.
Hollywood tried to tell the story with Air America. Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. smiled their way through slapstick chaos, but the truth was weirder. The real CAT was weirder because it was true: a commercial airline that flew heroin for warlords, paratroopers for coups, and body bags for a government that denied it even owned a single plane.
