Henry David Thoreau was an American writer, philosopher, and naturalist who was part of the mid-19th century transcendentalist movement. He's probably most famous for his book "Walden," in which he writes about his experiences living in a cabin in the woods near Walden Pond in Massachusetts. Thoreau was a big advocate of simple living, self-reliance, and a deep appreciation for nature. He also wrote extensively about civil disobedience, which inspired later civil rights leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
