The porcupine was the unofficial mascot of libertarians in the USA and elsewhere for a long time. And unofficial is fine with most who sport the prickly little fella. In a confederation of diversely-minded individuals, it can be hard to settle on something like iconography. But in the last few years, he became official. But I don't think it matters to him one way or another.
That's why the porcupine is unique. Sure there's the Don't Tread On Me Gadsden snake warding off interlopers with rattle and fangs, which don't get me wrong is pretty awesome. Good mascot with history. But old Mr. Porcupine packs quite a wallop minding his own business as well! And he's pretty damn adorable doing it. Plus he peacefully goes about his day bothering nobody, avoiding problems, and respecting others who may have a different way of going about things. Doesn't bother Mr. Porcupine one bit. Now that sounds a little more like someone we know, doesn't it?
