The distinctive Airforce roundel was put into place in 1943, the U.S. ditched the yellow outlines and red center dot a couple of years prior worried about confusion with the Japanese Imperial zeros in the fog of war. By 43 they introduced solid white bars to either side of the insignia to further distinguish our planes from the enemy. This scheme was held until well after VE-day.
