The graphic is taken from the first edition volume of Adam Smith's An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, the man responsible more than anyone for the birth of the "dismal science" as fellow Scotsman Thomas Carlyle said, Smith's Wealth of Nations ushered in the classical model of economics.
Far from a dismal pessimist, Smith, along with fellow continental thinkers such as Bastiat and Say, had an optimist view human cooperation as a child of the Scottish Enlightenment. In Wealth of Nations the ongoing theme one notices is how the individual is improved by "frugality and good conduct." Things like saving, investing, free exchange, technological innovation, the division of labor, education, and capital formation were lauded as things that increased the wealth of a nation by improving the condition of the individual.
Ladies can wear these as well as they're unisex, but be mindful that they aren't women's cut, so they will drape differently than form fitting women's versions of this shirt which we also carry.
